History of Khirpai

Today Khirpai city may not boost great credentials on economic front, but during British era and even before that it was a major trading center. Historical records suggest that as early as 1660 many European merchants from France, Portuguese and England came here to acquire high quality cotton and silk and then export it to other destination. To unlock its economic potential in 1763 the French had even built a huge workshop factory. Khirpai’s status as a major trading hub continued to grow even stronger when East India Company took complete control of Bengal province by the end of 18th century. Under East India Company’s rule the indigo plantation in this region grew drastically. Owing to this export of indigo increased in manifolds. However, owing to many factors Khirpai’s economic resurgence declined dramatically by the end of 19th century. Since this dramatic decline the town has never ever been able to reclaim zenith.

These responsibilities are as follows: facilitating supply of drinking water to all households, maintenance of birth and death record, supplying health amenities to government hospitals and collection of property tax. Speaking about administrative details, then there are 10 wards in this municipal council, elections for which are held once in every 5 years. According to 2011 census approximately 14,548 people were living across these 10 wards.
